ENGINEERING NOTE 13 / 50 · SMS
Diagnose a service mismatch before buying another number
A number offered for one service is not a universal SMS inbox. Confirm the intended platform and country before allocating a replacement.
Published by OPEN RAMBO. The engineering patterns and pseudocode illustrate designs, not a documented product API. Numerical examples are illustrative.
Use stable service identifiers
Display names change and may be translated. Store a stable service identifier with the order, plus the displayed label at purchase time. Do not map services by substring matching; similar names can refer to different products or verification flows.
Check the destination form
Ask whether the target form accepted the international number and whether it actually offered SMS. An email challenge or authenticator prompt is not an SMS delivery failure. Use redacted error text to distinguish rejection before sending from waiting after sending.
Preserve the first order outcome
Resolve or cancel the original order according to its rules before creating more orders. Multiple overlapping numbers make it harder to identify which code belongs to which attempt. Keep the service, allocation time and target-send time in one timeline when available.
Illustrative implementation
order_context = (service_id, country_id, allocated_at)
if target_challenge != "sms":
classify_as("different_verification_channel")Acceptance check
Test two similarly named services and a non-SMS challenge. Neither should be silently treated as the requested SMS workflow.
